The Niedersachsenstadion was completed in 1954 and has been home to Hannover 96 since 1959. Both Brazil and Holland played
matches here during the 1974 FIFA World Cup.
- An announcement from the sports committee of the city of Hanover in January 2001 invited investment bids for a new, purpose-built
football stadium.
- Four offers were tabled (two for reconstruction/two for new stadia).
- On 5 November ,2001, the administrative committee of the city of Hannover decided to reconstruct the 1954-built Niedersachsenstadion.
- The reconstruction design was finally chosen by the city council of Hannover in their session on December 13, 2001.
- Building work will begin in March 2003 with the tear-down of the North stands, and progress until the scheduled completion
date of 1 April 2005, or even earlier.
- Major steps during the remodelling: Summer 2003 – playing pitch is moved towards West stands and tear-down of the
East stands as well as the South curve; Summer of 2004 – installation of new roof, installation of new flood lights
as well as a heating system for the grass field; end of 2004 – completion of the East stands.
Financiamiento: €24m from the city of Hannover, state of Niedersachsen and region of
Hannover, €20m from a bank consortium, €20m from the “Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau” (secured by
a guarantee from the city of Hannover).
